Re:Myst & NAB? - 2011/09/25 06:49
Oh, I love Myst, and Myst inspired PM- levels could be pretty fun to make. I also especially like that last shot, as it looks like that wood texture is nearly identical to a Sequoia wood texture I know of!
As for a roaming around kind of level, I've actually tried something like this. A few of you may remember the demo I distributed called "Foam" which was going to be a Myst-inspired, surreal, NAB-based, story driven puzzle game. Making those kinds of puzzles in NAB proved feasible, but fidgety. In the end, there really is no clicking interface like in Myst, so puzzle control becomes an issue. Anything you make is going to have to be simplified and very large. Its not a bad idea, but it would take a lot of work, and frankly I feel my efforts are best placed in remaking maps and fixing bugs.
However, this does bring up another good point. NerfEd could be used as a starting point for a Myst-inspired Flash game instead. Similarly to how I constructed the Lab website, one could theoretically capture the retro 3D essence of Myst with a slight graphical update (NAB is quite a bit better than Myst's imagery, but still retains a retro look of an older 3D engine). It might limit us on animations however, as I would not be able to animate complex items without movers, and we know how fidgety movers are. Also, the video capture might look out of place quality-wise compared to the imagery of the background.
But in the end, most other free point and clicks don't feature any animation, and are usually drawn, not modeled. So its not like its a huge dip in quality to nix animation. However, once again this is just a related idea I've had for a while. I might end up doing this myself since It might make a good testament to my skills on a resume.
Back on topic, I like the idea, but it might not be highest on my priority list.
But I can imagine part of Foam going like...
"kskskkskshhhshs... Bring me.... kskshhshkskshshs BLUE weapons!... kshskshshshshkssshh..."
How to play NAB...
